Digital Civic Participation and Misinformation during the 2020 Taiwanese Presidential Election

From fact-checking chatbots to community-maintained misinformation databases, Taiwan has emerged as a critical case-study for citizen participation in politics online. Due Taiwan’s geopolitical history with China, the recent 2020 Taiwanese Presidential Election brought fierce levels of online engagement led by citizens from both sides strait. In this article, we study and digital on three platforms, namely Line, Twitter, Professional Technology Temple (PTT, equivalent Reddit). Each these platforms presents different facet elections. Results reveal that greatest level disagreement occurs discussion about incumbent president Tsai. Chinese users demonstrate emergent coordination selective around topics like Hong Kong, President Tsai, whereas Covid-19 are avoided. We discover an imbalance political presence Tsai which suggests partisan practices disinformation regulation. The cases China point toward growing trend where regular citizens, enabled new media, can exacerbate hinder flow misinformation. highlights overlooked aspect studies, beyond veracity information itself, is clash ideologies, practices, cultural matter democratic ideals.
